Question: I saw last week’s Comedy Cabinet post about how nobody starts a New Year’s resolution til the Monday after New Years. I agree with that, but was wondering if you have any advice about how to stick to your resolution long-term?
It’s so true, that actually sticking to your resolution can be really difficult. You’re adding a new task, habit, etc, or changing an old way of doing things, and the hardest part is that you have to do it cold turkey! Or so you may think…
Resolutions are a great way to motivate yourself, but they won’t last long if you don’t do it right.
Firstly, make a resolution that is realistic. If you try to go from one extreme to the other, you’re going to burn out fast.
Just because you want to start fresh in the new year doesn’t mean you have to go big or go home. For example, if you want to start jogging more, start off gradually. A mile, then eventually 2, 3, but don’t try to run a marathon right away.
A final thought: exercise willpower. Self-improvement and goal-oriented behavior is not easy, but if you dig deep, the odds are you can stick to your resolution in 2019!
Hope that helps! Till next time…
