Question: “So I moved to a new city a few months ago, and I am having a hard time figuring out how to make new friends. I know it takes time, but having no plans this Labor Day Weekend really highlighted it for me. Any suggestions on how to make new friends?”
While moving to a new city is really exciting, it can be really difficult and come with challenges that you may not have considered. For example, making new friends. I bet you had no problem making new friends in school and recreational activities, but now things are less structured.
However, you kind of need to step back and remember how you did it as a kid. Treat your work environment like you would have treated school, in that this is a great place to meet new people. Chat with some co-workers. See if they want to grab lunch, or maybe even meet up after work. If your situation is different, like maybe you work from home or are still looking for a job, then your extra-curricular activities (or as an adult, simply your hobbies) are a great place to meet people. Find something you’re interesting in, and sign up. It really is a matter of getting out of your comfort zone, and putting yourself out there.
If all else fails, we have the benefit of living in the 21st century. While dating apps get the most attention, there are tons of legitimate websites and apps that people use to make new friends.
The main takeaway is that it is up to you to put yourself out there, and to remember that building new and lasting friendships takes time. With patience and a willingness to go outside of your comfort zone, you will have more friends than you know what to do with soon enough!
Hope that helps! Till next time…
