Question: I am terrified to do any Public Speaking, whether it’s talking at a meeting at work, presenting a project at school, etc. How do I get over this?
First of all, it is completely normal to be afraid of public speaking. Most people rank speaking in public higher on their ‘greatest fears’ list than death!
The biggest thing is to be prepared. If you know what you are going to say, or just have a paper with some talking points, that will be immensely helpful. The odds are you won’t even need the paper, but just knowing you have it will keep you calm.
Speak at a moderate pace and remember to breathe so you do not find yourself talking faster than you can think or gasping for air mid-sentence.
And lastly, in the neighborhood of being prepared is: practice. Practice speaking at home in front of a mirror over and over again. Let your personality shine through. Maybe even go sing some karaoke to practice being in front of people with the focus on you. It’s a safe place to try, because you can’t really mess up karaoke!
With some experience, good prep, and practice, you’ll be a public speaking pro in no time!
Hope that helps! Till next time…
